Thursday Q&A with Avah Taylor
Jamaican-born Avah Taylor is a fashion blogger and personal stylist based in Canada. When not busy building her brand or bringing fashion to the masses through her website, she offers style makeovers and personal shopping services.
OCS: Who are your style icons?
AT: Rihanna, Gianni Versace, Anna Dello Russo, Ulyana Sergeenko, and Miroslava Duma to name a few.
OCS: What’s on your bedside table?
AT: My Bible and a photo of my Dad (RIP).
OCS: Best home accessory?
AT: My baby blue terry cloth robe.
OCS: Best recent fashion find?
AT: A pair of black suede heels from Zara.
OCS: Whom would you invite for dinner if you could choose anyone in the world?
AT: That’s a tough question but off the top of my head I’ll say Mark Zuckerberg.
OCS: You can see the debut of any piece of music in history. What would it be?
AT: I would’ve loved to have been in the studio when Whitney Houston recorded I Will Always Love You.
OCS: What’s your earliest memory?
AT: Accompanying my Dad on his business trips.
OCS: Your biggest fashion faux-pas, when, where and how? Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I made one.
OCS: Proudest moments?
AT: Successfully launching my T-shirt line and blog, being hired by Rohan Marley (Bob Marley’s son) as his personal assistant, and styling Cathy Lumsden, the host of The Best Advice on Rogers TV.
OCS: Favourite piece of furniture?
AT: My bed
OCS: Qualities you most admire in a person?
AT: Kindness and loyalty
OCS: Whom would you most like to dress?
OCS: Describe a perfect day off (it can be anywhere in the world).
AT: Laying on a yacht in St. Barts with my loved ones, drinking cosmopolitans.
OCS: Favourite visual artist, living or dead?
AT: Scott Schuman (aka The Sartorialist.)
OCS: Favourite local artist?
AT: I have two and they’re both makeup artists. Afia from Metamorphosis Beauty who did my makeup for this shoot and Noah from Faces By Noah who does my makeup for 90 per cent of the events I attend. Afia works at MAC in the Rideau Centre and Noah works at NARS in The Bay (Rideau Centre).
OCS: Best book you read in the past year?
AT: How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie
OCS: Favourite food?
AT: I love pasta!
OCS: Most-oft-played song on your iPod or MP3 player?
AT: Currently that would be Diamonds by Rihanna.
OCS: Wine, beer or both?
OCS: Mac or PC?
AT: Don’t judge me but I’m old school so it’s PC for me.
OCS: Fine dining or plain old diners?
AT: Fine dining
OCS: Best restaurant in Ottawa?
AT: Mezzanotte on Murray Street in the ByWard Market. They’re like family!
OCS: Person, place or thing that makes you proudest/happiest that you live in Ottawa?
AT: James Jefferson and Daniel Mackinnon from Blackbook Lifestyle. They’ve opened a lot of doors for me and have been nothing but supportive since we first met.

OCS: Favourite place to spend time?
AT: At home in Jamaica.
OCS: How would you like the world to remember you? What would your eulogist ideally say?
AT: I want to be remembered as a woman with a good heart that took care of her family, who stood up for what she believed in, who marched to the beat of her own drum and made her mark in fashion.
