Thursday Q&A with Arran Elliott
Born and raised in Ottawa, Arran Elliott is the owner and master stylist at Studio B Urban Modern Hair. She has worked in the industry for the past 16 years and now runs a busy salon in The Glebe. She’s worked on movie sets, fashion shows, rock stars, and recently showcased her paintings at a local event. She answered Style’s many questions.
OCS: Who are your style icons?
AE: My style icons are Oribe, Lady Gaga, Michelle Pfieffer (Catwomen), Mad Men
OCS: What’s on your bedside table?
AE: Chocolate wrappers and a musical unicorn.
OCS: Best home accessory?
AE: My artwork and my terra cotta red bedside tables with jewelled knobs
OCS: Best recent fashion find?
AE: Vintage Holt Renfrew fur hat found at Ragtime
OCS: Whom would you invite for dinner if you could choose anyone in the world?
AE: Dr. Phil and Christopher Walken
OCS: You can see the debut of any piece of music in history. What would it be?
AE: Michael Jackson
OCS: What’s your earliest memory?
AE: Getting a Fisher Price tool belt for my second birthday
OCS: Your biggest fashion faux-pas, when, where and how?
AE: Terry-towel half top, black skin tight pants, fake tan, fake nails, tons of makeup, pushup bra. My mother told me I looked like trash, and now I can see she was right!
OCS: Proudest moments?
AE: Getting my first pay cheque from Le Château; buying my business; working hands on with my style icon Oribe in New York City.
OCS: Favourite piece of furniture?
AE: Red terra cotta bedside tables with jewelled knobs
OCS: Qualities you most admire in a person?
AE: Hard-working, honest, creative, someone who can stand alone (one-of-a-kind)
OCS: Whom would you most like to dress?
AE: Oribe…hands down.
OCS: Describe a perfect day off (it can be anywhere in the world).
AE: Perfect day off: Me and my best friend Amie Jane in New York City. No plans … just do it!
OCS: Favourite visual artist, living or dead?
AE: Alexander McQueen and Picasso

AE: Dave Cooper
OCS: Best book you read in the past year?
AE: It was Jenna Jameson: How to Make Love Like a Porn Star.
OCS: Favourite food?
AE: My husband’s cooking … and chocolate
OCS: Most-oft-played song on your iPod or MP3 player?
AE: I don’t have either of those devices but at the shop, it would be All of the Lights by Kanye West.

AE: Both
OCS: Mac or PC?
AE: Mac
OCS: Fine dining or plain old diners?
AE: I married a chef.
OCS: Best restaurant in Ottawa?
AE: Whalesbone
OCS: Person, place or thing that makes you proudest/happiest that you live in Ottawa?
AE: My business and my clients make me happiest to be here.

AE: I don’t do computers.

OCS: What’s your guilty pleasure?
AE: Eating chocolate in bed…in the middle of the night

AE: My home
OCS: How would you like the world to remember you? What would your eulogist ideally say?
AE: I want to make people think either through my expression in hair or artwork. I want to be known for always doing something different … like wearing a dish towel as a scarf as I did today!
