Tessa Bonhomme sports a David McCaffrey dress he calls Shimmer, a silver and black multi-layered sequin show-stopper, priced at $900. It features a bateau neckline and sexy low scooped back. Smoky black crystal earrings, $95, and wide black diamond crystal bracelet, $175, from True Bijoux’s Private Collection.
Canada’s superstar defenceman Tessa Bonhomme is expected to make Canada proud when Ottawa hosts the Women’s World Hockey Championships April 2-9. Watch a behind-the-scenes video of our Style fashion shoot with her as she skates in a David McCaffrey evening gown.
Tessa Bonhomme is the modern-day version of Wonder Woman: beautiful, gutsy, well spoken and incredibly fit. She’s also an Olympic and world champion in women’s hockey and is expected to make Canada proud when Ottawa hosts the world’s April 2-9.
The 27-year-old star defenceman, who grew up in Sudbury and studied speech and hearing science at Ohio University, has played hockey since she was three. While she has excelled at just about any sport she signed up for, including basketball
and flag football, hockey is her passion. She is considered a veteran on the team and is enjoying her role mentoring some of the younger players.
Poised and adventuresome, Bonhomme, who has nearly 16,000 Twitter followers, was the first female hockey player to appear on CBC’s Battle of the Blades, which she won in 2011 with fellow Olympian David Pelletier. She has also appeared on Wipeout and was named one of 30 most beautiful athletes on the planet by Sportsnet Magazine.
“I don’t know who paid someone to say that,” laughs Bonhomme, who is a member of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League’s Toronto Furies.
Even though she spends a lot of time in the limelight, there are several things that only her close friends know. She quit ballet when she was 13 to focus on hockey, she doesn’t like any type of hot drink even though most of her day is spent in
damp rinks and she has a tattoo on her left foot of a Chinese symbol that means laughter, which she got along with several high school chums before they went their separate ways. She also raids the closet of her 78-year-old grandmother, whom she calls the “most fashionable lady in Sudbury,” when she’s looking for the perfect pair of shoes.
“There are two sides to my closet: my professional dress attire and my workout and game attire. I wear power suits and dress pants with fashionable tops when I’m working as a commentator for Leafs TV doing the pre-game and post-game
shows and like to dress in skinny jeans, sweatpants and Nike sweatshirts the rest of the time.”
Bonhomme was up for anything (as long as it was tasteful!) at our fashion shoot at Carleton University’s Ice House when she was in Ottawa for a five-day training camp in January. Members of the Ravens men’s hockey team didn’t mind when
we took over their dressing room for one shot.
