OTTAWA – Having attended many a fashion week in our capital, this was the first I had the opportunity to help out behind the scenes. It’s amazing how much your perspective changes simply by viewing the show from the other side of the curtain. For those who are not in the know, Ottawa Fashion Week is a major creative undertaking by a group of passionate volunteers. The army of hands on deck weeks and months before the catwalk is laid out is truly inspiring. Volunteers on social media, marketing, production and coordination, model wranglers, designer de-stressers, PR, hair, make-up…. You name it, and there’s a volunteer there ready to take a designer’s vision and turn it into reality.
This season, I had the chance to help out in the production of Isobel Walker’s FrAsh A/W ’12 collection. Both Isobel and I were so amazed at the amount of creative support and dedication we saw from the team at OFW. Between exams, full-time jobs and travel (some volunteers came from Toronto and Montreal to help out), we were humbled by the level of support designers receive in the conception of the shows. Our own assistant volunteers, Ranna, Jennifer and Patricia, were there at casting, at fittings, rehearsals and dressing. If there is one sentiment to take away from Ottawa Fashion Week, attending means supporting local culture, creativity and community.
With fashion, you expect a lot of ego, but there was little ego in the tents last night. The team from Smashbox Cosmetics and The Loft Hair Spa created a camp inside the Westin where more than 50 make-up artists and hairstylists combed, sprayed, powdered and glossed more than 100 faces (and bodies). Beauty trends ranged from angelic (at FrAsh) to geek-chic (at !NuI.) to elegant (Elena Hinke) and apocalyptic (Y!D.N.A.) and each look was carefully crafted to suit the show’s vision. From a behind-the-scenes point of view, A/W ’12 has plenty to offer. Take a look at our gallery from yesterday’s shows and stay tuned to our blog for more coverage Sunday and Monday.
