42 shades of magenta
Holt Renfrew, which is busy celebrating its 175th birthday this month, is flush in magenta merchandise as designers and premium brands created items to mark the Canadian department store’s big anniversary.
Holt’s is holding a series of national events, including mobile pop-ups and the launch of Holts Hot @175, a line consisting of 42 items, most of them in the company’s signature shade of magenta, ranging from a six-pack of Diet Coke at $5.99 to a $16,800 gold-and-tourmaline David Yurman collar and Manolo Blahnik magenta suede pumps, $595.
The Ottawa department store opened in 1942 on Queen Street and moved to its current location on Sparks Street in 1977. When I was in my early teens, my girlfriends and I would hop on a bus on Saturdays and head downtown. Our first stop was a walk through Holt’s before heading up Sparks Street Mall and into the ByWard Market. Later in high school and in university, I spent time working at Holt’s as a perfume representative for various beauty companies. The high-end department store is all about customer service and quality brands. The magenta merchandise is currently available at the Ottawa store now while quantities last.
