Tony Fouhse Q&A
Ottawa Citizen Style: Who are your style icons?
Tony Fouhse: It’d have to be Johnny Rotten, even though that dates me. Plus, like me, he’s getting old and fat.
OCS: What’s on your bedside table?
TF: An alarm clock. I’m an inveterate reader but store my books on the floor.
OCS: Best home accessory?
TF: My Rancilio Silvia [espresso maker], hands down.
OCS: Best recent fashion find?
TF: Well, I was recently invited to speak at a photo festival in Boston. Part of my “duties” were to go to a few VIP functions so I thought I might want to try to fit in. Ended up buying a Hugo Boss sport coat to use as camouflage. First sport coat/suit thingy I’ve ever owned. Seemed to work.
OCS: You may choose anyone in the world — whom do you invite to dinner?
TF: Courtney Love and Eminem, together. Entertaining, I’m sure.
OCS: You can see the debut of any piece of music in history. What would it be?
TF: The music in my head… and it’s not music, if you know what I mean.
OCS: What’s your earliest memory?
TF: ????
OCS: Your biggest fashion faux-pas, when, where and how?
TF: Probably just about every morning, when I get dressed.
OCS: Proudest moment?
TF: Receiving The Karsh Award for Photography.
OCS: Favourite piece of furniture?
TF: My office chair, it’s a Hermann Miller Aeron.
OCS: Qualities you most admire in a person?
TF: Honesty and juice.
OCS: Describe a perfect day off (it can be anywhere in the world).
TF: What’s a day off?
OCS: Favourite visual artist, living or dead?
TF: Robert Frank (especially his Polaroids).
OCS: Favourite local artist (if different from above)?
TF: Lyle Richardson, beautiful, twisted, jewel-like watercolours.
OCS: Best book you read in the past year?
TF: LowLife, by Scot Sothern. It’s a book of photographs, but Scot also writes these amazing stories to accompany the pictures.
OCS: Favourite food?
TF: Curries, plus most things I barbecue.
OCS: Wine, beer or both?
TF: Neither, I’m a tee-totaller.
OCS: Mac or PC?
TF: Mac
OCS: Fine dining or plain old diners?
TF: Diners, for sure.
OCS: Best restaurant in Ottawa?
TF: Depends on my mood.
OCS: Person, place or thing that makes you proudest/happiest that you live in Ottawa?
TF: My house.
OCS: Fave blog or website?
TF: Conscientious by Jorg Colberg.
OCS: Twitter, Facebook or both?
TF: Facebook with a side of Twitter. Mostly, though, [my] blog.
OCS: What’s your guilty pleasure?
TF: Guilt.
OCS: Favourite place to spend time?
TF: Home.
OCS: How would you like the world to remember you? What would your eulogist ideally say?
TF: As a good person who tried his hardest, is how I’d like to be remembered. My eulogist might say that, but would probably add that I could be a bit of a dick sometimes. True.
