I was wondering about long-term trends, are there are any long term trends you are noticing that would lean you toward a certain photograph over another for creating a collection.
Hi Erica Artlover,
Just seeing your comment now. That is a really good question, and one that is hard to answer. If you’re looking for work that will increase in value, then it’s a bit like trying to predict the stock market, or the next fashion trend (though, perhaps not quite so fickle).
The best approach when building a collection is to go with your gut, find work that speaks to you on an emotional level, and then pick a focus. A strong collection, in my opinion, is one that has a thread of connectedness in it’s foundation. For instance, you may want to start collecting emerging photography from Canada – and focus on young artists that are producing work now. I definitely lean towards this option because it’s an affordable alternative, and allows you to have fun and pay attention to what is going on locally.
If you’re interested in reading more about art as an investment, I’ve written that up in the ART 101 section on http://www.eyebuyart.com at the following url:

Thanks for the great question!
Cheers,
